Self Employed – I work to live, not live to work.

For the past 3 years I’ve been successfully self-employed. I’ll share my tips for business success as an entrepreneur, pertaining to social media, sales, and relationship building. Why? Because I want to help you also become self employed and make money being you. To take back charge of your life.

Being self employed has given me the freedom to travel, write books, and to spend a lot of time with my German Shepherd benny. But, what I really love about being self employed is having the time and freedom to live my own life. I work to live, not live to work. Learn how to make money being you with me, Kathleen Parisien. tap into the creative process

I do not wake up to an alarm clock, or have to commute to work everyday. However, I do work really hard, but it’s creative work that I want to be doing. I am the captain of my own ship, and so are you. Human beings are creative in nature, and not having the ability to create a life you love is unacceptable.

Step Outside Your Comfort Zone

Fear, and comfort can stop us from living our dreams. I know because it took me three years to finally publish my book, Citizen of the World.  Become inspired to take action outside your comfort zone, and embrace your fears.

When you shake up your routine, try something new, or do something you’re fearful of, evolution happens. Just like a snowball, the more action you take, the bigger the results you see. I’ve learned that the things we fear the most, are the things we should address face on. Instead of hiding from your fears, conquer them. That is how I’ve lived my life, for the most part. As humans we are not perfect, and it’s important to be patient with yourself and practice self-care. Instead, truly ask yourself “What am I afraid of? Chances are pursuing what you’re fearful of is the solution you’ve been seeking. Let’s talk about our fears on the Citizen of the World Podcast.

By conquering our fears, following our true purposes, we make the world a better place.

Every living organism on this planet is connected. So, this podcast is a platform to celebrate collaboration, instead of competition. Working together, sharing our successes in life, business and relationships so all of us can live our true purposes. If each and everyone of us lives out our purpose, and we help each other get there, than the world would be a much better place. That is what Citizen of the World Podcast is all about!

Leave Toxic Environments

I’ll share insight on how I was depressed and dissatisfied with life when I was just 22 years old. I graduated university, full of ambition but there were no meaningful jobs. Working hard to get a job in the Government left me bored as it felt like I was wasting my life away. So In 2012, I quit my 9-5 job, and had absolutely no plans. I just knew there was something else out there for me. How could I live my life just waiting for retirement to travel? I was just 22 years old, and people were counting down their days to retirement. Like they were waiting to live their lives! How could I do this?  It would have been harder to stay than to leave, so I left.

Take Time for Yourself

I took time for myself, how often can you say you’ve done that? Without stresses of today, or social expectations down your neck, when is the last time you took time to listen to your heart? When was the last time you followed your dreams? Do you even listen to what your dreams are? I didn’t. I didn’t do any work on myself until I quit my 9-5 job. Then, after a few months of just going to the gym and spending hours at the library, reading books that I always said I would read, I knew I had to leave Canada to follow my dreams fearlessly.

Volunteer internationally seemed like a good fit, and would look good on my resume. Finally, my dreams were coming true as I was leaving Canada.  There were no meaningful jobs available and I desperately wanted to find something meaningful to do. AIESEC, the largest student volunteer platform in the world connects university students and recent graduates with internships internationally. I applied to positions in South Korea, Egypt, Spain, France, Brazil, just about everywhere. Suddenly, Brazil accepted my application and I was off to the capital of Brazil, Brasilia. It was a 2 month internship, but I booked a 6 month flight ticket! Follow your dreams fearlessly to avoid stagnant.

Self Discovery Through Travel

I went to brazil with no fears, just excitement. Excitement for my life again, for a new culture and adventure. I worked hard to learn Portuguese, learn the Brazilian way of life and I tried to find jobs. I wanted to live in Brazil. But, after only 2 months in Brasilia, I listened to my heart that told me to go traveling. I traveled to South America, where I fell in love with an Israeli. After 4 months of traveling together throughout Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia and Peru, he went home and I went back to Canada. However, I just couldn’t sit still. So much curiosity about Israel and Palestine, combined with restlessness inspired me to pack my bags, again. Again, follow your dreams fearlessly!

Instead of learning about it in a book, I immersed myself into the conflict. I went to study my Masters degree at Tel Aviv University, but then I realized they were only telling me half the story of the conflict. If I wanted to really learn about the conflict, I’d have to go to Palestine. Just one month in Israel and I went into the military zone of the west bank. Which is also known as Palestine. It is through traveling to Palestine and Israel that I learned the most about life, as it is through hate that there is love.

This is what Citizen of the world, the book is all about. Through traveling, and learning about the world, I learned about myself.

Through leaving my comfort zone, selling my belongings and stepping into the unknown, I have become a better person. And, so that is why I wanted to create this Citizen of the World Podcast, because each of us has a light within us. However, some of us just need more inspiration to get going with our goals and follow our dreams.

That is because as Citizens of the World, we are all connected. So, the Citizen of the World Podcast will feature guests who can help others in business, life, and relationships.  Let’s collaborate to accomplish our goals together. We’ll also feature different travel destinations to expose the local cultures. I’ve always felt to blessed to immerse myself into different cultures all around the world. Now, with Citizen of the World Podcast you can join me on my international adventures. Be sure to check out the Citizen of the World Jamaican Podcast Series here.

Why Citizen of the World?

I’m going to read an excerpt from the introduction of my book, Citizen of the World.

I’m fascinated by birds as they have no citizenship, passports, birthright. They don’t have to obey borders, laws, or regulations. They live, peacefully. The birds just are. I, myself feel like a bird as I don’t stay in one place for very long. I cross international borders easily, am free spirited, and feel at home wherever I go.

Imagine a world where all human beings are tolerant, respectful, generous, and accepting of others. One where human beings are not defined by the passport they hold. A compassionate society where strangers become friends easily, and conversations flow naturally, without this eagerness to prove the other wrong. Collaboration instead of competition.

I identify with being a Citizen of the World, and so should you. Our differences as humans should bring us together, not tear us apart. We should not be defined by the passports we hold, as we are all human beings. All one species, and we must work together to deal with global issues. We can do that, by stepping outside of our comfort zones, discovering ourselves, and the world around us.

Albert Einstein Quote

“Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind.”

5 Ways to be a Citizen of the World

1 – Recognize that we are all connected, regardless if you’re from India or from Canada, we are all human beings. We are all connected through globalization. In your own life, think about how you’re affecting the environment, or other people. Do you treat others the same way you’d want to be treated?

2 – Recognize that our communities are global. Redefine who your community is. It’s not just your neighbourhood but there’s a larger scale. Even this podcast that will be listened to in Israel, Mexico, Canada, all over the world. We are global, and need to think globally.

3- Have compassion and empathy. Think about life in someone else’s shoes. This is why traveling is so beneficial as you get to see life through someone else’s perspective. Try this more often so you can connect more to others. Step outside your comfort zone and get to know the other. You’ll learn that #1 is the truth.

4- Travel and stay with local cultures, be curious about people who are different and learn from them. Instead of seeing them as different, see what you can learn from them. Try eating new food, go to different places, see the world is to change the world, become aware of global issues that affect millions of people. Just need to get out of your comfort zone first.

5- Follow your true purpose – Your true purpose is who you are right now. Instead of trying to be someone you aren’t, just be who you are. Too many distractions, try travel for spiritual growth.
